Many in my profession (legal) think they can do the accounting on their own. But the old saying with attorneys applies here, too— “he who represents himself has a fool for attorney” (or something like that). Most people think about taxes once a year. And those folks often end up with an unpleasant surprise in April—they owe money, can’t pay it, and have no other options. Though no one likes “tax time,” I have always been prepared and never surprised. Steve P

We look forward to scheduling an appointment with you. When you arrive, make yourself at home. Enjoy a cup of coffee, tea or water. Have a piece of candy, or two, if you need a little boost. What you will realize about us is that we eat, a lot! Fueling our mind with yummy snacks tends to be our weakness. Don’t be surprised if you see our gray table full of snacks. You may even smell fresh cookies baking. You are welcome to a snack too. Following our first meeting we will provide you with a comprehensive listing of the agreed upon services that Harper & Co., will be providing for you. When coming for the first time, we encourage you to bring the following items:

• Copies of prior year tax returns (the last two years) and amounts of Federal, State and Local taxes paid for the current year.

• W2’s, 1099’s, K-1’s and any interest, dividend, or other income statements.

• Childcare and Education Expenses.

• Mortgage / Student Loan interest paid.

• Charitable Contributions – both cash and non-cash.

• Cost Basis and gain/loss reports for any stocks bought or sold.

• Business expenses and/or un-reimbursed employee expenses.

• Retirement plan contributions (Roth / Traditional IRA’s, 401K plans, etc.)

• Anything else that you have received labeled “Tax Information Enclosed” or that you feel may be relevant.

• Any documents that you have received but are not sure what to do with.
